主题：Translators as Researchers: Background research in translation practice

Research is a word that most of us are very familiar with. To write academic essays, we need to do research. To prepare for the exams, we need to do research. To buy something online, we need to do research. How about translation then? Is research a must for translation? When we are given a translation task to work on, can we grab a pen and a piece of paper and dive straight in?
In this lecture, we will explore the importance of “background research” in translation practice and the commonalities between being a translator and a researcher. Specifically, we will analyse why background research is important for translators, and how we can conduct effective background research for our translation commissions, both for academic and professional purposes. Drawing on different examples, we will discover the loopholes that we can easily fall in, and discuss the various aids we can use to facilitate our translation activities and ensure the quality of our translations.
No preparation is needed for the lecture. However, we will have several group activities to work on during the lecture. Please make sure you can access your keyboard and microphone during the class (would be nice to see your faces as well!). Looking forward to seeing you then！
讲师简介：
Dr Sui He is a lecturer in Chinese-English Translation and Interpretation at Swansea University. She obtained her PhD in Translation Studies from UCL in January 2022. Before joining Swansea, she taught the theoretical and practical modules for MA and MSc programmes at the University of Edinburgh (2020-2022) and UCL (2018-2020). Her research interest mainly lies in metaphor translation and the application of metaphor in intercultural communication. Her works have been published in Intercultural Pragmatics, Oxford Comparative Criticism & Translation Review, Theatre Times, and Diverse Voices in Chinese Translation and Interpreting: Theory and Practice (Springer 2021). Alongside her teaching and research, she also works as a researcher for the Chinese Classics Translation Project at the Royal Shakespeare Company and as a freelance translator/interpreter between English, Mandarin Chinese and Cantonese.

讲座摘要：
Dr Yan Wu is an Associate Professor in Media Communication and PR, Swansea University. At this lecture, Dr Yan Wu will introduce semiotic analysis as a method in analysing audio-visual media. The lecture will cover key concepts such as ‘sign’, ‘signifier’, ‘signified’, ‘denotation’, ‘connotation’ and consider how semiotics can be applied to the analysis of a diverse range of media texts. The lecture will end with an interactive session by inviting students to apply semiology to the analysis of an award-winning documentary series Gwyr, directed and produced by Swansea University media lecturer Mr Georgios Dimitropoulous.
讲师简介：
Dr Yan Wu is an Associate Professor in Media and Communications studies, School of Culture and Communication, Swansea University, and a Higher Education Academy Fellow since 2017. She currently leads the Centre on Digital Arts and Humanities and is also an Editorial Board Member for Journalism Practice (Routledge). She has worked in both British and Chinese Higher Education sectors and conducted teaching and research in both the United Kingdom and China.
Her publications in the Chinese language include three co-authored books and a number of articles in Chinese Social Science Citation Index journal Modern Communication. Her English publications appear in journals such as New Media and Society, Global Media and China, International Journal of Digital Television, and has book chapters in Media and Public Sphere (2007), Climate Change and Mass Media (2008), and Migration and the Media (2012).
